I am the dog mom to 2 rescues and they are a part of my family. Just like my kids, I love them for their wonderfulness and their not-so-good-nesses. Doesn't matter, love is love and loss is crushing. I'm glad you had so many years with Kai. May you heal and relish your good memories. And bless you for your bravery in doing the right thing for Kai. I am so so sorry for your loss.
