I have a camera in the Canon Powershot S (pick your number -- mine is 3, but it's probably up to 6 by now), which has IS plus a quite studly 10x (or is it 12x) optical zoom. You could do worse.

I'm assuming you don't want to go the dslr route... In any case, if you're going for that 10x optical zoom, then make sure it also has *optical* image stabilization. When your zoomed way in on something it's very very easy to get blurred shots. Of course like zoom there is digital image stabilization and optical. Definitely take the optical if you can.

But of course you do know you'd be miles better off even with the cheapest Nikon or Canon DSLR though right? ;) Plus, I've seen the scenery in your posts.. you'd have so much to shoot and you'd probably end up with a serious hobby on your hands. ;) Of course that's not always a good thing.
