When the blurb about Dora came on the 10pm news, I happened to be scrolling through the channel guide and saw that "<a href="http://tlc.discovery.com/tv/toddlers-tiaras/about-toddlers-and-tiaras.html" rel="nofollow">Toddlers & Tiaras</a>" was on. I then turned to my husband and went on a five minute rant about how those people are to blame for Dora.

By the way, did you ever see what they did to Holly Hobbie? She's not overly sexy or anything, but she's so modern, she makes me sad. Why not just come up with a new character? Why they gotta change up my Holly? LOL.

Goodness, I'd hate for my umbrage over this Dora makeover to rank simply as a mommyblogger in a kerfuffle. Somehow when I think of mommybloggers, I rarely come up with the image of egalitarian feminist, careerist, professionals concerned about gender role stereotypes and their children. Somehow "mommybloggers" makes me think about debates about breastfeeding, babywearing and co-sleeping. Aha, my bias is showing. :-)

But yes, I am am mommyblogger unhappy about the increased slutification of the young girl. When I started seeing 6 year olds who were worried about being fat and 8 year olds who couldn't wait to look sexy, the pediatrician in me knew that something was going decidedly wrong.

I was one of those girls very similar to how you describe yourself. I would have been nice for Dora to be the one image for tweendom of a together, not boy, makeup or clothing obsessed girl for my daughter to view on TV. You do realize that I am going to have to self-medicate before allowing Barbie in my house, right? She is the antichrist!

Thanks for the link!

Yeah, my daughter (age 6.5) is very emphatic about not liking Dora anymore, as she is too grown up for that. I'm not sure what she'll think of New Dora, though.
