I never heard it named as darcy's law, but I clearly remember an experiment showing osmosis when I was in about 7th grade.

sausage casing, tied with string and filled with plain (ok, it may have been distilled) water. one put into salt water, one into plain water, one into sugar water. see what happens. FUN!

I have this problem taking Mr. Darcy seriously. You see, he was played (to the nines!) by Laurence Olivier. Beautifully. (The original Pride & Prejudice) On the other hand, his law explains why one wants to put sugar on the strawberries & raspberries -- to bring out the juice. Also why high blood sugar is so dang bad for the cells of the body.

We actually did the experiment of the nekkid egg in water in chemistry class in high school. The egg actually SWELLS because the water can flow INTO the egg, but once it mixes with the egg white, it can't flow out anymore (too dense and large).

Very very cool stuff!

Isn't it time that GD learns that only birds protect their eggs by surrounding them with bone. Fish, lizards & amphibs all have flexible outer membranes. You might link over to my post about the baby horned toads & show that to the GD, as long as she is into eggs!
