Wow! What an endorsement! Now will you set aside a big chunk of time to read Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle — it’s an absolutely fascinating romp through the times and genesis of The Royal Society, featuring such worthies as Leibniz, Newton, Hooke, assorted royalty & choice vagabonds.

Hmmm. Not my usual thing. But I too steadfastly ignore the more “popular” literature because I’m almost always disappointed. Do you know how many people told me to read “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and the Stephanie Plum series because it was SO awesome?? Ick. I also disllike formulaic serial detective novels and vomitous romances. OTher than that, I’m open to an ything, but tend to avoid science fiction. However, the few times I took a recommendation and read a science fiction novel, I was not sorry. I’ve been looking for something new and different to read, so thanks!

Ooh, I *LOVE* Snow Crash. I think it’s some of Stephenson’s best work. In addition to all the other wonderful characters, I have a particular fondness for Uncle Enzo.

Using Jayne’s definition I think a strong case could be made that there are a lot of humans alive today that are not “conscious.” Certain soon-to-be-ex-political leaders and others of their ilk come immediately to mind…
