Hmm now that I think about it, I think it actually glowed blue from the flame. But my memory has painted it red! All I remember is I hated walking over that thing. It freaked me out!

Your grandparents house with all of its varying bookcases sounds like my dream. Right now I live in a tiny apartment and already have a bookcase that takes up almost an entire wall, and it's overflowing as it is. My fiance wants me to give some of my books away, but someday we'll have enough space to buy enough bookcases to house my (ever-growing) collection.

Your description of your grandparents' heating grates reminds me of my grandparents house. My grandfather and his father-in-law built the house themselves, and there was a huge heating grate in the hallway, and it glowed red at times, and I swear I thought some kind of demon was down there so I would avoid walking that way if I could! :)

Still trying to get the grandparents to give us theirs when we have a house to put them in, but had to say as I grew up in the 60s in Evanston, I remember those houses well...my best friend had one of those secret staircases!

My brother saved all the books from our childhood home, but I have enough (though I'll never have enough bookshelves) so that my grandchildren will hopefully have these wonderful memories. We actually read the Encyclopedia Britanica and loved, loved, loved the pages of pictures of various dog breeds. And, I really memorized Joyce Kilmer's poetry. Has anyone heard of him lately? This was a great post. You really should be published somewhere.

My husband saved a few of them from his youth...mostly the physical sciences ones. (He is an engineer.) I'll have to check to see which ones we have. He was trying to get our older son interested in them the other day, but I think it needs to be an accidental discovery, not forced.

Well, I wouldn't stop at scientists...I know at least one poet that was prompted by those books too. After all, a story well told is a story well told.
