I think that they're projecting, to use an old psych jargon word. People figure that if they had the mojo, they'd do all sorts of things that they ought not and therefore, there should be a catch, if all were properly balanced in this world. I figure that things aren't in balance -- and if there were magic about, we mundanes would be in a terrible pickle.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

- anyway,I figure people think that something as awesome as magic has to have a price. I think it would be way cooler if it didn't and you could screw around with people just because! Or if it was a sense like sight or smell.
I think people like to feel that you need a built in responsibility for magics....

I finished the third Soldier Son book when it came out in hardback--I got it from the library as, sadly, I rarely buy books these days. I liked it, but I doubt that I will read the series again. (Contrast that with the fact that I've read Hobb's Farseer books at least three times; part of that, though, is that I really like the court intrigue setting.) I will admit, though, that while the series didn't rock my world, I was also a little puzzled by how much reviewers really didn't like Navare. I think you're right that they were also viewing him scornfully, and that really does say a lot about our culture, doesn't it?

I should try the Friedman. I'm actually reading sf/f again, after taking kind of a break. :)
