I recall that even in speaking, you as a chile tried to regularize the English language. Especially irregular verbs. However, what has fascinated me over my life is finding those groups in our country that retain some of the older forms, especially "be" (i.e., the Ebonics "he be" is an early form which you also find in the sea islands off the coast of Georgia & the Carolinas...)

Congratulations to the OD!! I am at the stage of realizing just how many homynyms we have...I said "buy" to The Bee the other day, and she waved bye. Sigh. Frustrating.

Yay for Omegadotter! Once reading becomes easy for her, the rest of her life will be an adventure in learning. Sure, its hard, but you just wait til you have kids trying to do long division when they don't adequately recall their multiplication tables. I cannot WAIT for geometry!

WOW. Those Magic Treehouse books are awesome - and advanced for young Dotter's grade! Way to go Miss Dotter!!!

You're both entering a wonderful time with books - Cam Jansen, Junie B Jones, Katie Kazoo - some really cool girls in those pages!

But yeah, the English language is a kicker - especially for children. I have to make myself correct L'il Vinegar some days - but the mispronunciations are so adorable - and thought provoking!

Oh my yes. We're running into the same thing here, with the added bonus of a little sister who is learning to speak and parents (and the girls too, but not as seriously) trying to learn a new language. I really never realized how complicated language is before. And how easily I speak English...

wooo-hooo! congrats on that one page. I can't wait to read the post when she is just reading, and you don't have a clue of how many pages it is because it is just more or less automatic. It's gonna happen before your eyes.

We are not reading yet, as we put no effort into it really and K isn't until next year. However, I can see some of the pitfalls already. Every time we talk about LED lights, the kid (named Ellie) says "LED! Like Ellie! It's like my name!" and I think that at some point we are actually going to have to explain the difference. And then we will ahve to explain why LED makes more sense, spelling-wise, than Ellie does. For ages when she first started spelling her name she would want it to start with an L. Who could blame her?

It is indeed a funny language. But then for most kids, it does become automatic.

Good for the Dotter!

(I'll bet "said" is a sight word now, though, as often as it's used in the Jack and Annie books. Heh.)
