Perhaps you recall the cousin from Memphis who spent several years wearing "beau-ti-ful" clothes that her mom bought from the resale shops. Her greatgrandmother (my mom) was appalled by such lack of conformity. On the other hand, I was fascinated by her fluffy concoctions -- and how it all changed once she entered school. Now, the standard blue jeans, etc. I think the beau-ti-ful dresses were much more interesting and individual!

I liked that piece in the NYT, but I agree with you that the imprinting on a little girl's psyche that she is "less than" or an ornament does NOT happen by virtue of playing with Barbies. And furthermore, even the most liberated among us want to find a partner who charishes us... which is kind of "princess-like" I think. But totally normal and healthy too.

Our daughter likes to lift her leg up like an ice skater and tumble over and do that over and over again while demanding that we show "Jamie and David" again-and-again-and-again.....
