Now (since the mid-1930s) the so-called "progressive" educators have promoted the idea of making kids learn to read using hieroglyphics! Huh? Progressive??? I haven't Snopes-checked this factoid, but recall hearing that in China an educated person will have learned about 3000 symbols by the time he/she reaches adulthood. BTW, Dick & Jane were around when I was a kid in the 30s, learning via phonics. I really learned to read when my Aunt Jo bought me an OZ book, read me one or two chapters & then got interested in more adult entertainment. Obviously, I HAD to learn how to read.
