Or you can have a 1st grader reading at mid-3rd grade level who will spend the summer bitching because "I'm not learning anything".

Maybe I should tell her this summer she will learn how to pronounce the letter "R". She still sounds like a Kennedy, but not bad enough to get help.

Relax. Reading will come when it does. Then The Dotter will be reading your email over your shoulder.

Omegagranny here -- as I recall my history, it was a great day in the ancient world when the Phoenicians invented the alphabet, those symbols representing sounds that could be used for words in various languages and free folk from having to learn all those individual hieroglyphs. Now (since the mid-1930s) the so-called "progressive" educators have promoted the idea of making kids learn to read using hieroglyphics!
Huh? Progressive???

I haven't Snopes-checked this factoid, but recall hearing that in China an educated person will have learned about 3000 symbols by the time he/she reaches adulthood.

BTW, Dick & Jane were around when I was a kid in the 30s, learning via phonics. I really learned to read when my Aunt Jo bought me an OZ book, read me one or two chapters & then got interested in more adult entertainment. Obviously, I HAD to learn how to read.
