Adoption commentary

Karen, over at The Nekkid Ovary, has a list of “10 Things You Shouldn’t Say to Someone Adopting”. Good list.

Folks who aren’t adoptive parents sometimes don’t understand what is offensive or upsetting about some of the sayings, and someone asked, very nicely, if Karen could explain her problem with some of them.

OmegaMom, being a pushy big mouth, couldn’t help but provide her list of reasons why they bother her, in the commentary.

Check it out. Karen’s got a good blog; if you’ve got a friend going through the adoption process right now, Karen’s blog can give you a good taste of the feelings brought on by/during the process. (Warning to those who have never suffered from infertility: Karen often vents about fertiles versus infertiles, and it can be difficult to read sometimes. But still good. And enlightening. And well-written. And funny.)

    Hey Omega Mom-Just wanted to say I read your response to Karen’s post on The Naked Ovary and I LOVED everything you had to say. Gotta confess I was curious when I saw you had written “Zhuang”. So I jumped over to your blog and found your “Metcha Day” pictures. Another Nanning adoption! The same room at the government building! And your daughter’s eyes and intense look-boy does that remind me of someone. Our dd will be 4 the end of March. She joined our family in April ‘03. According to one of our guides she is most likely Zhuang. We just found all of that fascinating because although dh and I can only base this on documentaries we have seen about Vietnam the people in Nanning looked more Vietnamese to us than other Chinese people we had seen in China, esp. the young men who worked at the Majestic Hotel. Anyway-I’m not trying to categorize the babies into their ethnic groups but I find it to be something that may be of great interest to our daughter as she gets older.
    Nice to have “met” you.

    It never matters how much time passes…all those feelings are always there. Awesome posts. It has never occured to me to ask, possibly because of all that we went through, “Why did you/are you adopting?” The answer is obvious, of course.
