You might hear “You’re not my REAL mom!” one day - especially when she's a teenager and you're not letting her abuse herself. Every kid goes through that stage. But just remember that she'll grow out of it, and will learn to appreciate all the sacrifices you make for her!

A mother is so much more than just blood or DNA, and she is lucky to be able to call you Mom!!

Hello,

I'm new to your blog, I may have posted a comment awhile back, but can't remember to which post. I just wanted to thank you for this post.

My children understand their genetic heritage came from their first mothers and father, but both struggle with finding a way to express their feelings about their families. They know they are real. But it's hard to relate to something you know is real, but can't see, hear, touch, or feel.

And I know it must be very, very hard on them, even if they appear to be fine.

Thanks again.

this is a beautiful post. i just posted something similar on mine, actually, about "names". i'm a birthmother. if someone referred to me as "tummy lady", i'd be a bit perturbed. best wishes.

I've heard I Hate You! and I Want My REAL Mom! quite a few times now from Older Daughter. Didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Tonight, Younger Daughter cried in my arms over her birthmother for the first time. They both refer to their birthmothers as their "real" mother, no matter what I say. It doesn't bug me that much. They are still crawling into MY arms for comfort. I just wish I could take away the pain they feel about not knowing their birthmoms.

As these things come, I have no doubt you will handle it as well or better than anybody

Thanks-beautifully said. I think that once you are dealing with the child, the 'real' thing is less painful and scary. At least it is for me.

Also, thanks for the 'viking kitty' link. Our daughter seems to love it (much to my dismay). She peaked over while I was first playing it from your site. I have been looking for the clip for a while. Now I am trying to explain to her why cats are carrying hammers, axes and wearing helmets. But no luck.
